Yelping with Cormac: Red Lobster →
Blogs are the new poetry.

Two stars.
The manager sat tied to the chair in the corral, firelit on all sides by the torches of the townfolk. Dean stood next to him with a Colt army revolver pointed to the hardpacked earth. Who else will speak, he said.
A chorus of voices rose at once. From the din a...

15 Interesting Things About Vaginas and the... →
I hate talking about sex (I could be having it instead!), but I never skip a chance to distribute facts about and for sexual health. Health is sexy! Go forth and recreate, ladies.
It’s amazing how much misinformation is out there about the vagina, and the entire vulva in general. Given how fascinated our society is with the “female” body, you’d think we’d be a little more informed. But from...

So when was it that you made that incredibly difficult choice to continue doing something you have been raised to think is normal? Was it tough to get started on your path to a diet/lifestyle that perpetuates the murder of of animals? Do you sometimes find it difficult to stick to your convictions because vegan food is everywhere...

Mandie and the Holiday Surprise! I was forced to attend church every week in my youth, and the Mandie series in the church library was the one thing that kept me from losing my mind. Mandie was pure BAMFiness.

Wash Your Hands, Handle Some Food
too long; almost didn’t write it
Wash Your Hands, Handle Some Food
I’m feeling great, no lie. I’m feeling more centered and focused because I’ve been steadily straining my reach for these frames of mind, the way you would strain to grasp the best pieces of fruit high on a tree. But the holidays are approaching and I’ve always found that time unwinds dangerously for me at the end of the...

New Year's Resolution
Peridot
Today I become 26 years of age. Like a butterfly, that is turning 26 years old. Or a beautiful swan about to say, “Hey, it’s my birthday.”
Looking Back
Part of my birthday celebration involves looking back to ten years ago.
Ten years ago, I did not have a laptop. Ten years ago, I didn’t yet blog, probably perhaps because I didn’t want to have the...
Totally Morgan: Lucille Ball. Mehhhhhhh. →
Many of the show’s plot foils are stressful because of Ricky’s chauvinism—I remember screaming at the television when I was twelve, whenever he would squash her or trick her — and the societal context in which the show came to be developed means many people at the time probably never saw his dominance for what it was. But, thankfully, Lucille Ball managed to bring humor to...
The Wolf and The Butterfly: I Love Lucy...kinda →
I watched so much I Love Lucy that when I see Lucy’s living room, my brain automatically, fleetingly, reads it as a cue that I’m home; displaced stage blocking, like it was my oven in which I purposefully burnt the toast to teach Ricky a lesson. If I’m at home already, my brain is like, now you’re more at home.
I also recall that during summer vacation, my sister and I...

Dear Dewdrop: A Badvice Column for People of Bad...
One of my favorite things to do is read the inquiries found in advice columns and offer my own advice aloud. Here is that advice.
From Slate’s “Dear Prudence” column:
Q. My husband and I met in college in an English class, and our first date was mostly a conversation about our favorite novels. One of my all-time favorite works is Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. I’m pregnant with my first...

David: I have to start making music. I'm six months behind this one guy, my sworn enemy.
Rocio: Haven't you learned anything from the best movie ever*?!?!? You have to see this as a challenge.
David: Yeah, but what if he's Mozart and I'm Salieri?
Rocio: ....
David: Oh, wait! That means I get to kill him! Thanks, Roze!
*Amadeus is my favorite movie of all time. It is the best movie ever. I'll be taking no more questions at this time.

Process.
I have a list of character names for endeavors that require words—endeavors for which I want lucrative attention someday SOON please—and on certain days I remember to use these names as I spin the details in my mind. I’m like: …. and then Torsten will marry Amparo but her dad actually will not approve, but it won’t matter because they move far away, no, yes,...

Who gives a fuck about an Oxford comma? →

You know who doesn’t give a fuck anymore? The University of Oxford styleguide:
As a general rule, do not use the serial/Oxford comma: so write ‘a, b and c’ not ‘a, b, and c’.
Game changer.

On Baking Blueberry Pie, Ruining Cherry Pie
I. One secret is to keep the butter as cold as possible. Cold butter releases steam in the oven, and the best way to keep it cold is to dice your sticks of butter and place back into the fridge until ready to use. Limit the time you handle the dough with your bare hands. Use ice milk or ice water when needed. In the oven, the steam from the solid butter relaxes out of the dough and gives you a...

I. I wrote a poem specifically for this series.
In the beginning God created my parents and my birth And God saw that it was good.
He was the only one.

Dear Dewdrop: A Badvice Column for People of Bad...
One of my favorite things to do is read the inquiries found in advice columns and offer my own advice aloud. Here is that advice.
From Slate’s “Dear Prudence” column:
Q. Simple: I’m in my early 20s, recently married, and in love with my husband. I know this is one of the most simple questions but: What do I do about this feeling I have been getting lately that I want to sleep with every man I...
Scenes from Resortlife #273930
Norm: Rosie, what does it mean when your coffee machine has a little dial at the top and on one end it has an outline of a cup and on the other it has a full cup.
Rocio: (from the couch) It's probably to indicate how strong of a cup you want.
Norm: Hm. It has an outline of a cup and the other is a filled-in cup.
Rocio: Probably, it's probably for how big of a cup you want.
Norm: Here. I'll take a picture of it and I'll send it to you. Where's my phone? (Exits room).
Mom: You guys are worse than me. I text from the other room.
(Norm reenters).
Mom: My acupuncturist says that for the body to fully rest you have to be fully flat laying down. I use three pillows, but she says that not even one pillow is needed.
Norm: Is that true?
Mom: That's what she said. I don't believe her. When I was a little girl, I didn't use pillows and I had nightmares for forever, every night, for years, and they were always--there were always bulls.
Rocio: I'm sorry, what. Bowls?
Mom: Bulls.
Rocio: Bolls. Bolls.
Mom: Yeah, bulls. I was always dreaming about the toros, and they were always chasing me or keeping me trapped. Somebody told me once that they are gossips.
Norm: Did you get the text? How do you want your coffee?
Rocio: Yes, turn the dial all the way to the right.
Mom: They represent gossips. In Mexico, in dreams, if you're dreaming about bulls there's gossiping.
Rocio: We're talking about, like, cows. Cows, but male. Right? They symbolize people gossiping about you.
Mom: Yes, in my last dream--my acupunturist said to lay flat--so in my last dream there was a bull who was injured. He blocked my path, because he needed my help. And he was talking and I was so scared of him; I was so scared, I ran away. Because, I mean, he was talking to me! I used to dream like this, I was, in the years between 15 to 17 years. I was telling Norma that it was because people were gossiping that I was dating everyone in the whole town. But I really wasn't.
Rocio: Three pillows. How does one use three pillows.
Mom: Like this. (Grabs three pieces of cabbage and piles them together; it looks like a nest with arms). My head goes here.
Rocio: Oh, Mom.
Mom: So, I tried but the nightmares came back and I was so scared, Normita.
Post Grad Grays: On Babies →
postgradgrays:
My mom perhaps takes it personally. It wounds her yearn. We don’t discuss babies now. Of her five children, the one most likely to have kids already has kids, he has three. My mother is already a grandmother, but it’s not enough. We did a rundown around the dinner table once: N, the married…
