I am perplexed that people can say “you should respect my choice to eat meat just as I respect your choice not to.”

So when was it that you made that incredibly difficult choice to continue doing something you have been raised to think is normal? Was it tough to get started on your path to a diet/lifestyle that perpetuates the murder of of animals? Do you sometimes find it difficult to stick to your convictions because vegan food is everywhere and no matter what you do, someone is always shoving cruelty free alternatives in your face through all manner of advertising?

Give me a fucking break, you didn’t “choose” shit. It’s the life you are used to and using the “it’s my choice” line is bullshit. But you probably already knew that hence why you feel the need to defend yourself.

Oh, and if you actually DID struggle with the decision and you landed on NOT being vegan….well then congratulations, you are an asshole.

Another fun argument I’ve heard is: “you’re being mean and political, so that’s why no one respects veganism”. Yeah, that’s why you’re eating meat, because I’m passionate and informed.

Wait, so if you take the line that people are merely automatons who’ve put no thought in to what they’re doing but that if they have then they’re an asshole THOSE PEOPLE DON’T LISTEN TO YOU?

No. Fucking. Way.

Well I for one am shocked.

Now I do not agree that people should expect vegans to respect the view that it’s OK to eat meat. That isn’t possible. One can’t respect a view that one finds morally repugnant. So for clarity’s sake they should probably say “you should shut the fuck up and not talk to me because I couldn’t give a flying fuck what you think about it so either leave that subject alone or leave me alone” or something. It’d save a lot of time.

There are some positions that are not subject to compromise. Veganism isn’t something that’s got any give or take to it. By all means campaign, by all means berate, but do not be surprised if people don’t care for you doing that.

Then again, I don’t really need people around me, but I suppose my ability to walk away from others doesn’t work for everyone.

Easy there. I was pointing to the common rebuttal that I’ve heard, in response to any number of vegan arguments, which deflects from the actual issue of talking about meat to the way the arguer (the vegan) is saying it.
