Conversations With My Mother #1

7:37 a.m.

Mom: Do you want to go to Cancun?

Me: What?

Mom: You know, get a job, stay there, finish your novel.

Me: What?

Mom: I wonder how hard it would be for you to get a work visa.

Me: Oh. I…

10:04 a.m.

Mom: I just think it would be nice to get a new change of scenery. New environment. Would you like to go to Mexico City or Cuernavaca…?

Me: Are you thinking of sending me to—? I’m… not sure. I have student loans. I wish I could…I would go to Isla Mujeres, it’s been my dream to live there and…write. But, Mexico City! I would love to go there. Actually, I was thinking about moving to New York. Or even San Francisco. But, definitely, leaving. Yes.

Mom: Oh. (To my dad) She has student loans.

12:22 p.m.

Me: Mom, I think I would like to go live in Mexico. Instead. For two months. Screw it.

Mom: No! Don’t go!
